Methodology
For this project, we wanted to understand the relationship between social media and youth environmental activists.
To do this, we first conducted a literature review for the intersection of topics and found no clear singular paper. We expanded our literature research by looking at research on youth activism, digital activism, and climate activism separately.
For our data analysis, we followed the youth activists and organizations who have proliferated this movement, based on their social media presence and news coverage. By tracking the activists, we were able to identify hashtags that they commonly employed to spread awareness on issues and marches.
We monitored the use and popularity of these Twitter hashtags via TrendsMap and found that not only had there been increased use of climate hashtags, but also that many of them correlate with specific events orchestrated by the environmental activists and their organizations.
From this, we were able to detect and observe the youth environmental activists’ avenues and strategies for amplifying their voices and creating worldwide climate change movements.
